The Social Security Death
Index (SSDI) contains the
names, social security numbers, place of last residence and birth and (some) death dates of individuals who were
assigned Social Security numbers and whose death was reported to the Social
Security Administration. Most of the records are for
individuals whose deaths were recorded after 1965. Once you have retrieved a record from the SSDI you can
contact the Social Security Administration to request a copy of the individual's Application for Social Security, which will
include more information, including maiden name and names of parents. For

through Ellis Island and the Port of New York. The ship companies that
transported these passengers kept detailed passenger lists, called "ship
