happy new year

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month

There's no cure for glaucoma, but early treatment can often stop the damage and protect your vision. Anyone can get glaucoma, but those at higher risk include: Everyone over age 60, especially Hispanics/Latinos. African Americans over age 40

  • Glaucoma can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss
  • Who is at higher risk for glaucoma? African Americans over age 40; everyone over age 60, especially Hispanics/Latinos; and people with a family history of glaucoma
  • Glaucoma usually has no early warning signs. Don’t wait until you notice vision problems; make sure to get a dilated eye exam
  • #DidYouKnow 8 out of every 10 Hispanics/Latinos with glaucoma don’t know they have it? If you are Hispanic/Latino and age 60 or older, have a family history of glaucoma, or have diabetes, you are at higher risk
  • African Americans are at higher risk for glaucoma — and at a younger age. Glaucoma often has no early symptoms, but it can be detected early with a dilated eye exam, and early treatment can help save your sight
  • Help prevent vision loss from glaucoma: Get a dilated eye exam. You may be eligible to have most of the cost of an eye exam paid for by Medicare
  • If someone in your family has glaucoma, you may be at higher risk for the disease. Talk with your relatives and let them know that glaucoma runs in families
