Rules of Conduct

The Board of Trustees of the Woodbridge Public Library has adopted the following rules so that the Library may provide an atmosphere conducive to appropriate use of Library services and facilities.

Prohibited Activities

The following activities are prohibited in the Library:

  • Eating foods, other than packaged snack foods (e.g., eating meals such as pizza and takeout dinners)
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages
  • Smoking
  • Disruptive behavior such as talking loudly, making noise, running, playing on the stairs or in the elevator, roughhousing, throwing objects or blocking traffic areas or exits
  • Harassment or verbal abuse of Library users or staff
  • Physical assault / abuse of Library users or staff
  • Interfering with another person's use of the Library or with Library personnel's performance of their duties
  • Cell phone use in unauthorized areas of the building
  • Carrying a weapon of any kind into the Library unless authorized by law
  • Bring animals into the Library, except those needed to assist a person with a disability
  • Wearing inappropriate attire, including no shirt or shoes or attire such as cleats, etc., that may damage property
  • Bodily hygiene so offensive as to constitute a nuisance to others or to damage Library property
  • Soliciting or panhandling
  • Leaving a child under the age of 9-years-old unattended in the Library or failing to retrieve children from the Library at closing time (see policy on unattended children)
  • Disruptive congregating at computer terminals
  • Inappropriate use of the restrooms, including use as a laundry or bathing facility
  • Standing, walking or lying on Library furniture or putting feet on tables or chairs
  • Sleeping in a manner disturbing to others
  • Skateboarding or roller skating/blading on Library property
  • Engaging in inappropriate displays of affection
  • Refusing or failing to comply with a staff member's request or instruction
  • Damaging or stealing Library property or the property of Library users or staff
  • Using electronic devices at high enough volume that they are audible to others
  • Violating any municipal, state or federal law, including laws on assault, harassment, disorderly conduct, and reckless endangerment

Anyone who disrupts the Library or interferes with the rights of others trying to use the Library may be asked to leave. If an individual does not leave the Library when asked, staff will call the police. Persons engaged in activities in violation of municipal, state or federal laws will be subject to arrest and prosecution.
